Abstract:

English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has been promoted in many educational contexts as a critical means of facilitating subject learning and teaching while enhancing English language proficiency. However, learning and teaching subject content through English while simultaneously learning and teaching English present significant challenges for both students and teachers. To regulate the learning of subject content and English effectively, learners and teachers need to employ metacognitive strategies. In this paper, I draw on studies of EMI students and teachers in contexts such as Hong Kong and Vietnam to demonstrate how metacognition can serve as a useful lens for revealing and understanding the strategic responses that students and teachers adopt to address the challenges of EMI education. These insights also help identify ways to support students and teachers in maximising their educational gains through the use of English as a medium of instruction.
