Dr Dai Huteng is an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research lies at the intersection of computational linguistics, phonology, and cognitive science. He builds interpretable models of phonological learning that are grounded in formal language theory and tested on real-world data. His recent work explores how humans acquire sound patterns from noisy input and how machine learning methods can help us understand the underlying mechanisms of human language learning.

Abstract

This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to computational linguistics with a focus on machine learning approaches to address fundamental questions in linguistics and cognitive science—for example, how do any machines learn languages from noisy, real-world data? The session guides students through emerging research topics in computational linguistics, equipping them with the skills to work with large corpora and state-of-the-art models. Students will practice the pipeline of building machine learning models, while formalizing theoretically grounded questions that link computational models to linguistic theories and human cognition.
