Career-minded students were introduced to a Trainee Management Programme offered by The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (“Towngas”) during a Graduate School seminar on October 22. Ms Ivy Ko, Manager of Nurturing and Development at Towngas, started her talk with an introduction to the company’s history and future plans, followed by a detailed explanation of its Group Management Trainee (GMT) Programme.

Ms Ko explained that Towngas was founded in 1862. Its business is based in Hong Kong China and has expanded widely across 29 provincial-level regions in the Chinese Mainland. In recent years, the company has focused on developing green energy.

In introducing the GMT to the more than 100 students attending the seminar, Ms Ko explained that successful applicants would spend one year in Hong Kong China and another in the Chinese Mainland. She emphasised the importance of language skills. Applicants would be evaluated on their language (biliterate in both written Chinese and English, as well as trilingual in Cantonese, Putonghua, and spoken English). Ms Ko stressed the importance of showing initiative in learning and problem-solving, as well as creative thinking. She advised students not to avoid difficulties, as it may leave a negative impression.

At the end of the talk, Ms Ko gave some heartfelt advice: if you want to work and live in Hong Kong, it’s important to actively become part of the local community. She encouraged the students to learn Cantonese by watching local TV, a method that allowed them to improve their language skills in a relaxed manner.
