Survival Cantonese Workshop: Essential Workplace Language for Graduates
Postgraduate students have been strengthening their local language proficiency in a Survival Cantonese Workshop. Around 50 students participated in the session hosted by the Graduate School and the Student Affairs Office on March 31st. The workshop delivered practical, targeted content focused on everyday Cantonese, including commonly used expressions. Year 4 students from the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Chinese Language programme, Ms Yu Oi-fu and Ms Ho Yu-ching led the session.
The tutors introduced the Cantonese pronunciation of commonly used office items and standard workplace greetings in Hong Kong. The overview enabled participants to familiarise themselves with practical professional expressions. The latter half of the workshop focused on the nine tones and six pitch contours of Cantonese. Students were given the chance to put theory into practice with mock interviews followed by feedback from the tutors.
Participants described the session as both practical and rewarding. The tutors encouraged continued listening, speaking and practice in daily life to develop greater confidence and fluency for future employment and daily communication.
