Teaching quality, one of the foundations of a good education, was discussed in a seminar with Professor Ridwan Maulana on November 10. Around 30 students attended Professor Maulana’s presentation, which included findings from ongoing research into teacher effectiveness and development.

The seminar focused on methodological insights into teaching quality, including its inherent complexity, multidimensional definition, strengths and limitations of existing measurement tools, and key evaluation criteria like reliability and validity.

Prof Maulana emphasised common methods for evaluating teaching quality, including value-added models and newly developed AI-based assessments, along with their respective strengths, limitations, and application contexts.

The seminar addressed the views of various stakeholders, including students and teachers. Prof Maulana explained that students thought that different observers have different areas of expertise. On the other hand, experts offer professional insights. For example, peer teachers have empathy for classroom realities and contextual understanding. Prof Maulana explained that combining these diverse perspectives would lead to a more comprehensive assessment of teaching quality.

Professor Ridwan Maulana is Professor of Educational Sciences and Chair Professor of Comparative Learning Environments at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
