Expressive Arts for Self-Care
In a calm and safe space, around 20 students participated in the Graduate School’s (GS) inaugural self-care workshop. Newly appointed GS counsellor, Ms Melanie Tang, led the session on October 31, 2025. The workshop was guided by the principles of “acceptance and freedom of expression,” encouraging participants to explore self-care and emotional expression through non-verbal artistic forms.
Ms Tang began the workshop by creating an open and safe environment through relaxed, non-judgmental conversation. This was followed by tension-releasing activities, including stretching and creative writing exercises to describe their emotions. After taking stock of the various stressors, Ms Tang introduced the group to mindfulness meditation. Participants were prompted to focus inward and become more aware of their feelings, preparing them for the next stage: art creation activities.
During the Art Expression part, students chose materials such as yarn, fabric, and clay to create works that manifested their inner experiences and feelings. Ms Tang offered timely support and encouraged everyone to reach out to the University’s counselling services if needed. She emphasised that seeking psychological support is a healthy and normal action that strengthens both personal and professional development. Ms Tang reminded students to be aware of their emotions and manage their well-being in daily life by putting the idea of “loving yourself” into positive practice.
