Section 1: Application & Admission

a) Where can I obtain information about the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

b) What are the admission requirements for the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) Programme?

c) How do I submit my application?

Applications should be submitted via the EdUHK Online Application Systems at www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online/. No paper applications will be accepted. Applicants should read through the important notes contained in the “Online Application – Guided Tour” at https://banner.eduhk.hk/BannerAdmission/index.jsp before starting the online application process.

d) How much is the application fee and how should I pay it?

For details about the application fee, please refer to “Submission of Application”.

Applicants are encouraged to pay online by using either a VISA or Master credit card. Alternatively, applicants may choose to pay the fee by other payment methods as indicated on the Payment page.

For applicants who are not able to pay online, please be remembered to input a Payment Reference and upload the copy of the payment proof (e.g. ATM Advice, Bank-in Slip, Telegraphic Transfer) onto the EdUHK Online Application Systems at www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online/ or send it to the Graduate School via email, fax or by post. All the payment proof must clearly show the full English name of applicant, application number and the programme applied. No personal cheque or cash will be accepted. Please note that applications will remain incomplete until the correct fee is received.

e) When can I apply for the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

We accept EdD applications on a rolling basis, which means the sooner you apply, the sooner your application will be considered. Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible. The application period will be specified on the website of Graduate School.

Non-local applicants are advised to apply as early as possible to ensure completing all Student Visa / Entry Permit requirements prior to the commencement of the programme. It normally takes 6-8 weeks for the HKSAR Immigration Department to complete the application process upon receipt of all the required documents.

f) What documents are required to be submitted in support of my application?

Applicants are required to upload the following documents via the EdUHK Online Application Systems at www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online in support of their applications:

  • Transcript(s) of Post-secondary Study
  • Certificate(s) of Post-secondary Study
  • English Language Examination Certificate(s) (if applicable)
  • Personal Study Statement
  • Research Proposal
  • Other supporting documents [e.g. relevant examinationcertificate(s), qualification(s), etc.]

Applicants who have attended international University whose transcript(s) and / or certificate(s) are in a language other than Chinese or English must submit those transcripts and / or certificate(s) with certified English translations.

Please note that applicants are allowed to upload files up to a total of 25MB and the maximum size for each file is 4 MB. All files must be submitted in accepted formats only: GIF, JPG, MS Word or PDF format.

g) Do I need to submit hardcopies of supporting documents to the University?

No hardcopies of supporting documents are to be sent to the University. Supporting documents are to be uploaded to the EdUHK Online Application Systems at www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online/ only. Please do not send any original documents to the University in any circumstances as the University will not be responsible for any documents mislaid.

All the original documents of the qualifications stated in the application must be presented for verification at registration. Failure to do so shall lead to disqualification of the application and any offer made will be rescinded.

h) Can I submit the English test results later?

If English test results are required, applicants are required to upload all the application documents via the EdUHK Online Application Systems at www.eduhk.hk/acadprog/online/ on or before the application deadline. Application will remain incomplete until all necessary supporting documents are received.

i) What are the requirements for Research Proposal and Personal Study Statement? Should they be written in Chinese or in English?

j) Is there any specific format requirement for the referee’s report?

The template of the Academic Referee’s Report can be downloaded here.

k) How to submit the Referee’s Reports?

Two Referee’s Reports are required to be submitted to the Graduate School in support of your application. All information given in the Referee’s Report will be treated as strictly confidential. Please ask your Referees to send the Reports (with signature) directly to the Graduate School by email at eddchi@eduhk.hk or by post to the address below:

Please remind your Referee(s) to include the following information in the reports:

  • Your Full Name in English
  • Your Application Number
  • Your Applied Programme
l) Is it mandatory to complete the field on “Proposed Supervisor” in the online application form?

It is optional. Applicant may indicate the potential supervisor(s) who has / have relevant expertise / knowledge in the field of study of the applicant. Please note that the proposed supervisor(s) is / are only a preliminary nomination. The supervisory arrangement would be further discussed with the Area Coordinator and the department; and confirmed by the EdD Programme Committee after admission to the programme.

m) Can I apply for the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme and another programme at the same time?

Applicants may submit applications for more than one programme according to their own interests and needs. Should you decided to apply for more than one programme, separate applications should be launched for each programme. There may be differences between programmes regarding the minimum entrance requirement, normative study period and application period.

Please note that students enrolled in any full-time award bearing programmes (lasting for one year or longer) of the University should not simultaneously register for study for another qualification at this University or for a post-secondary qualification at another University without prior approval of the University. Students in breach of this regulation may be subject to discontinuation of studies at this University. In case of doubt, please seek advice from the Graduate School at eddchi@eduhk.hk.

n) What should I do if I wish to update my application information after an application is submitted online?

Applicants have the right of access to and correction of the information contained in their application. If applicants wish to update the application data, they may submit their request in writing to the Graduate School via email at eddchi@eduhk.hk. Please be reminded to quote the full English name of applicant, the application number and the programme applied in the email.

o) Will there be any admission interviews?

Shortlisted applicants are required to attend an admission interview. If applicants are selected for an interview, they will be informed via email or phone. Applicants are strongly advised to check their personal email frequently.

p) Will I be notified after I have submitted an application?

Upon successful submission of an application, applicants will receive an acknowledgement by email. It contains the application number, choice of programme and a payment reference number. Please retain this acknowledgement for future reference and enquiries.

q) When and how will the application results be announced?

Successful applicants will receive individual notifications by email or post. Applicants who have not been offered admission before the commencement of the programme may assume their applications unsuccessful. No individual notifications will be sent to unsuccessful applicants.

Section 2: Student Visa / Entry Permit Application

a) Am I a non-local applicant?

Please refer to here for the definitions of Local and Non-local Applicant.

b) How can I apply for a student visa after accepting the admission offer to the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

Non-local students must obtain a student visa in order to study in Hong Kong. Failure to obtain a student visa will result in not being permitted to register in the programme. You will be informed of the details about student visa application when an admission offer is made to you.

c) How long will the application for a student visa normally take?

Once your application for a student visa is received, all documents will be sent to the Hong Kong Immigration Department for processing. It normally takes around 6 to 8 weeks to complete the process. You are strongly advised to submit your student visa application as early as possible.

Section 3: Programme/Specialised Areas

a) What is the programme structure of the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

b) What is the medium of instruction of the Doctor of Education programme?

The medium of instruction is mainly Mandarin or Cantonese while English might be adopted when appropriate.

c) How long is the study period of the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

The normal study period is 3 years for full-time EdD (Chinese Class) programme and 4 years for part-time EdD (Chinese Class) programme.

d) What Specialized Areas are offered in the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

e) Whom to contact if I would like to know more about the Specialized Areas in the Doctor of Education programme?

f) What are the class schedules for taught courses and where are they held?

g) Are there any differences between the full-time and part-time study mode in the Doctor of Education (Chinese Class) programme?

The main differences are the study period and the required study load per semester.

  1. Study Period: The normal study period is 3 years for full-time EdD (Chinese Class) programme and 4 years for part-time EdD (Chinese Class) programme.
  2. Study Load: Full-time EdD (Chinese Class) students are required to take at least 6 credit points of taught courses per semester unless with prior approval, while for part-time EdD (Chinese Class) students there is no minimum credit load required. However, with reference to the University’s regulation, it is important to note that part-time students who have not registered for any course in two consecutive semesters will be considered to have withdrawn from the programme. These students are, therefore, expected to apply for deferment of studies if they do not register for any course in a semester.
h) Can I apply for credit transfer if I have taken a course similar to a listed course in the Doctor of Education programme?

Regarding credit transfer application, it could be handled after admission. Students would be required to fill in the necessary forms to be submitted to Graduate School. Please note that the application will be submitted to respective Department for consideration and approval. Please also read carefully the Policy on Credit Transfer and the Guidelines on Credit Transfer before submitting the application.

i) How much is the tuition for the Doctor of Education programme?

j) Can I apply for on-campus accommodation after admitted to the programme?

For non-local postgraduate students on self-funded programmes, the University does not guarantee on-campus accommodation, but students may apply for temporary accommodation in our Tai Po campus subject to availability of places. Students may visit the Off-campus Housing Information Platform (www.eduhk.hk/sao/offcampus/) for basic information on renting accommodation outside the campus, or contact the Student Affairs Office via email offcampus@eduhk.hk for assistance.
