Local History Revealed in Tai Po Walking Tour
A walking tour of Tai Po was held on the 19th of September 2025, with around 21 students attending.
The tour began at Tai Po Market MTR Station, which set the scene for an afternoon steeped in local history. The first stop was the Old Tai Po Police Station, which operated from 1899 until 1987. Declared a monument in 2021, it now serves as the Green Hub, a centre for environmental education and sustainable living.
The group continued to learn about the area’s transformation as they snaked their way through the old Tai Po market area to the Hong Kong Railway Museum. Originally the site of the Old Tai Po Market Railway Station, participants explored retired carriages, tested the seating arrangements and inspected vintage engines resting on the former Kowloon-Canton Railway tracks.
The final phase of the tour was the Fu Shin Street Market, a heritage-rich traditional shopping hub for fresh produce set beneath older low-rise apartments. Nestled between the tightly packed stalls, the Man Mo Temple (circa 1893) immersed participants in a combination of beliefs linked to academic success, justice and protection.
The walking tour is part of a wider initiative by the GS to foster cultural awareness and networking opportunities for postgraduates.
