2. EdUHK Research Postgraduate Studentship

All full-time students admitted to the UGC-funded Research Postgraduate (RPg) Programmes are automatically considered for Research Postgraduate Studentship (RPGS). As a form of scholarship, the RPGS provides the RPg students with financial assistance to complete the programme. The RPGS is given based on academic merit, and the award is not taxable income. The value of the studentship shall be determined by the University from time to time.

The monthly stipend for the 2026/27 academic year is HK$19,100 (approximately US$2,440) for all MPhil and PhD students and HK$19,600 (approximately US$2,450) for post-candidacy PhD students. The RPGS shall be tenable on an annual basis, and awards for subsequent years will be reviewed and determined by the University, subject to the satisfactory performance of RPGS holders. RPGS holders may also simultaneously be recipients of government loans and grants, and they may receive other scholarship awards on condition that this does not violate the terms and conditions of the other awards.

Holders of RPGS are required to undertake duties that carry educational benefits for the holders, such as, but not limited to, other research/academic activities, as assigned by the University. The amount of the duties shall not exceed, on average, 10 working hours per week in any full twelve-month period.

3. Tuition Waiver for Local Research Postgraduate Students

Starting from the 2018/19 academic year, the Government has provided a tuition waiver for all local students enrolled in the UGC-funded Research Postgraduate (RPg) programmes.

The objective of the tuition waiver is to incentivise more local students to join the RPg programmes, so as to build up a pool of local research talents in order to sustain Hong Kong’s competitiveness and propel the development of our higher education sector.
