Professor Guofang Li<\/strong> is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Transnational\/Global Perspectives of Language and Literacy Education of Children and Youth, University of British Columbia (UBC) and UBC\u2019s and Co-Director of UBC\u2019s Language Sciences Global Research Excellence Institute. Her research interests span longitudinal studies of bilingualism and biliteracy development, Chinese heritage language education, new literacies and technology-enhanced language teaching, bilingual language teacher education, and language policies in globalized contexts. As a leading researcher in language and literacy education internationally, her work and contribution has been recognized by numerous national and international awards including the 2016 Mid-Career Award from the Second Language Research Special Interest Group (SIG), American Educational Research Association (AERA), the 2013 and 2006 Ed Fry Book Award of the Literary Research Association (LRA), the 2010 AERA Early Career Award, and the 2008 Social Context of Education Division Early Career Award of AERA. Her recent books include: International Handbook of Literacies in Families and Communities<\/em> (Forthcoming), Handbook on Promoting Equity in Education for Inclusive Systems and Societies<\/em> (2024), Superdiversity and Teacher Education <\/em>(2021), Languages, Identities, Power and Cross-Cultural Pedagogies in Transnational Literacy Education<\/em> (2019), and Educating Chinese-heritage Students in the Global-Local Nexus: Identities, Challenges, and Opportunities <\/em>(2017).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mixed methods research methodology, with its unique advantages of integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods in one design, is gaining increasing popularity in education. In this online seminar, I will first share my metamorphosis from conducting qualitative research studies to designing and implementing longitudinal mixed methods research programs. Using my various research projects and papers as examples, I will then discuss different types of mixed methods research design and their strengths and limitations, followed by a reflection of lessons learned on how to capitalize on the strengths of the methodology and address potential challenges and drawbacks in the process of data collection, data analysis, and dissemination. I conclude by identifying key opportunities and potential for adopting the methodology in educational research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
