Seminar Series Supports Emerging Scholars’ Publishing Goals
A comprehensive three-part seminar series, aiming to equip RPg students with essential skills for success in academic publishing, was held in December. The series was led by Professor Samuel Chu Kai Wah and his doctoral graduates. Emphasising innovation in research methods alongside rigorous expectations, the seminars equipped participants with the tools and confidence needed to navigate the complex landscape of academic publishing effectively.
The first session focused on Crafting an Impactful Research Topic. Participants were encouraged to broaden their focus beyond a single topic, considering how their future work might evolve and drawing inspiration from Professor Chu’s journey. By utilising conceptual frameworks and real-world examples, the seminar guided participants in refining their ideas, assessing feasibility, and aligning topics with journal expectations.
The second seminar delved into Publishing a Review Paper in a Key Journal, placing a strong emphasis on navigating the review process, including both scoping and systematic reviews. Participants learned the importance of ensuring the focus of their articles aligns well with the interests of target journals. One of the guest speakers shared a comprehensive timeline outlining the different stages of publication and offered valuable tips for targeting top-tier journals. Participants were encouraged to engage actively in the review process, ask meaningful questions, and clearly articulate their contributions to the field.
The final session focused on Publishing an Empirical Article in a Key Journal. Speakers discussed their publication milestones, focusing on determining an effective paper title, identifying key findings, examining persistence in research, and advocating for self-belief while fostering a mindset centred on manageable goals and continuous learning. This session encouraged students to formulate personalised strategies, including constructing tailored journal lists that reflect specific research requirements and exploring various article types throughout the research process. By combining insights from multiple guest speakers, the series successfully presented a multitude of approaches tailored for RPg students.
Each seminar blended forward-looking insights with practical strategies, fostering an interactive environment where questions and discussions are encouraged. Delivered by experienced academics with proven track records in top-tier publications, the series empowered RPg students to approach publishing with greater confidence, clarity, and professionalism.
